An easy side dish that brings out the best in simple ingredients. Thinly sliced potatoes are seasoned and layered with fresh garlic, then slow-baked in milk and butter until they become tender. Finished with shredded cheese, this gratin is a perfect accompaniment to any main course or a satisfying meal on its own.
Ingredients :
- 6 medium potatoes
- 1 cup milk
- 3 garlic cloves
- 2 tbsp butter
- 3/4 cup shredded cheese (gruyere or mozzarella)
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/3 tsp black pepper
Preparation :
- Thoroughly wash and peel the potatoes, then slice them into thin, uniform rounds.
- Place the potato slices in a large mixing bowl and toss them with salt and black pepper until well-coated.
- Peel the garlic cloves and chop them into small pieces.
- Layer the seasoned potato slices in a baking dish, scattering the chopped garlic between the layers.
- Pour the milk over the potatoes and distribute the butter in small knobs across the top.
- Place in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) and bake for approximately 1 hour until the potatoes are tender.
- Remove the dish from the oven, sprinkle the shredded cheese evenly over the top, and bake for another 10 minutes until the cheese is melted and golden brown.
- Serve the potato gratin warm, sliced into generous portions.
